ATV quad biking on a jungle trail

ATV Quad Biking

Splash through mud, jungle trails and rice fields on a quad bike.

🕒 Half day (about 3–4 hours including transfer)💵 From around $35–50 per person (single rider); tandem options available.

ATV quad biking is messy, exhilarating fun — blast along jungle trails, through rice fields, rivers and even a cave or tunnel, on a powered quad bike. One of Bali's most popular adventure activities, and no experience is needed.

After a short training session you'll follow a guide along a set trail for around 1.5–2 hours, splashing through mud and water with rice-field and jungle views. Tandem bikes let a non-driver come along for the ride.

Awan drives you to the ATV base and back. Bring or wear clothes you're happy to ruin — mud is part of the fun — and operators usually provide a place to rinse off and change.

Highlights

  • Jungle trails, rice fields, river crossings and tunnels
  • Single or tandem (two-person) quad bikes
  • Full briefing and safety gear — no experience needed
  • Expect to get gloriously muddy

Good to know

  • No riding experience required; minimum age varies (often ~6+ on tandem).
  • You WILL get muddy — wear old clothes and closed shoes.
  • Shower and changing facilities are available at most operators.

What is ATV quad biking in Bali like, and do I need experience?

ATV (all-terrain vehicle) quad biking is a guided off-road ride on a four-wheeled bike through Bali's countryside - jungle tracks, rice fields, riverbeds, muddy puddles and, at several popular sites, a long cave-like tunnel. No experience or licence is needed. The quads are automatic or semi-automatic (twist-throttle, no manual gear changes), and a guide leads the group at a manageable pace on a set trail, so you're never finding your own way.

It's one of Bali's most popular adventure activities precisely because it's accessible: you get the thrill of mud and engine power without technical riding skill. Most sites are concentrated around Ubud, Payangan and the Gianyar countryside.

Single rider or tandem (two people, one quad)?

You can ride solo on your own quad or tandem, where two people share one machine with the driver in front and a passenger behind. Tandem is popular for couples, for an adult riding with a child, or for anyone who'd rather not drive themselves.

Solo gives you full control and is more fun if you want to drive; tandem is cheaper per pair and lets a nervous or younger person come along. Only the front rider controls the quad, so the driver should be the more confident one. Operators usually set a minimum age to drive solo (often around 12-15 - approximate) and a lower minimum to ride as a tandem passenger.

  • Single: your own quad, full control, best if you want to drive
  • Tandem: two share one quad, one drives; good for couples, kids and nervous riders
  • Front rider does all the steering, braking and throttle - choose accordingly

What to expect, step by step

After arrival and paperwork, you're given a helmet (and usually gloves and boots) and a short safety briefing and practice lap to get used to the throttle and brakes. Then you set off in a convoy behind a lead guide, with another guide often at the back, following the trail.

A typical ride lasts 1 to 2 hours depending on the package and covers rice paddies, jungle, a splash through shallow water or mud, and frequently a long man-made tunnel that's a signature photo moment. Guides stop at viewpoints for photos and to help anyone who gets stuck. You'll finish muddy, which is half the fun - most sites have showers and changing rooms.

Will I get muddy, and what should I wear?

Yes - expect to get splattered or soaked with mud, especially in the wet season and on tunnel/river sections. Dress in clothes you don't mind ruining and bring a complete change for afterwards.

  • Old clothes you can throw away or wash hard - shorts and a t-shirt are fine
  • Closed-toe shoes (trainers or the boots provided), not flip-flops
  • A full change of clothes, a towel, and a plastic bag for muddy gear
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • A strapped GoPro or waterproof phone pouch for photos; many sites also sell photo packages
  • Leave valuables in the locker; assume anything on you will get wet and dirty

Safety and fitness

Quad biking is hands-on but low-skill: the bikes are governed to sensible speeds on guided trails, you wear a helmet throughout, and guides ride with you to manage pace and help on tricky sections. The main risks are losing control on slippery mud or bumping the throttle in surprise, so listen to the briefing and keep a safe gap from the quad ahead.

It suits most reasonably fit adults and teens. The quads are heavier than they look and steering through ruts takes some arm and core effort, so it can be tiring over a longer ride. Operators typically ask about pregnancy and serious back or wrist problems; it's not recommended if you're pregnant. You don't need to be athletic, but you should be comfortable gripping and steering a machine for an hour or more.

Best time of day and season

Morning rides are the most comfortable - cooler temperatures and softer light for photos - and let you wash up and carry on with your day. Afternoon slots are fine too but hotter. Quad biking runs year-round.

The wet season (roughly November to March) means more mud and bigger puddles, which many people consider the best part; the dry season (roughly April to October) is dustier and a bit tamer. Either way you'll get dirty, just to different degrees.

How long it takes and how it fits a private-driver day

Allow around 2.5 to 3.5 hours at the site for a standard 1-2 hour ride once you add check-in, briefing, the ride itself, showering and changing, plus transfer time. Most ATV parks sit in the Ubud and Gianyar area, so they pair naturally with central and northern Bali sights.

On a private-driver day, Awan can drop you at the ATV park, hold your dry clothes and clean gear in the car, and collect you once you've showered - which makes it easy to combine a muddy morning ride with a calmer afternoon of rice terraces, a waterfall or a temple without sitting soaked in a shared shuttle.
